2009 Projects and Accomplishments

On March 23, 2009 the coalition presented a symposium on "End of Life Care and the Older Adult."  The symposium addressed Psychosocial Issues, Assessing Needs for Advocacy Intervention, Ethical Concerns and Spiritual and Emotional Transformation.  This symposium was very successful and provided a wealth of information to providers in the community. This was our biggest turnout yet and we appreciate Metro United Way, Seven Counties, and Forrest Pharmaceuticals as well as the presenters for all of the support.

The Coalition was involved with providing education to seniors at The Brook Senior Perspectives Program. Our members educated seniors about specific topics including stress management, how to protect yourself from exploitation, substance abuse, communication, personality adaptations, and KIPDA programs. This is an 8 week series presented to the seniors at The Brook.

MHAC Hoarding Symposium held September 14, 2009 was a success.  Speakers included representatives from: Park View Psychiatric Services, APS, Guardiacare, University of Louisville, County Attorney's Office, Inspections and Licensure, Arson Squad and Guardiacare. Participants also viewed "My Mother's Garden" which was a documentary about hoarding.

Nominations were held for new officers for MHAC and the following officers were appointed: Deborah Rattle, MSSW-President; Lori Paris, LCSW-Vice President and Treasurer; Michelle Wilcox,MSSW-Secretary

Stress Management Project- Susie Lawrence and Deborah Rattle have initiated the project at Senior Centers in the area.  The seniors are given manuals and taught stress management techniques.  Participants also complete a journal throughout the sessions.  This project will continue through 2010 and recipients are given an incentive for completing the program.
